Qoyllor’ity Sacred Pilgimage

9 day expedition, Sinakara Valley, Peru
Journey to the Sacred Andes:
A Spiritual Pilgrimage Beneath the Frozen Star
High in the Peruvian Andes, the sacred pilgrimage of Qoyllor'ity takes place under the glow of the sixth full moon each year. It is a one-of-a-kind celebration blending elements of ancient Andean traditions and Catholic ceremonies.
Qoyllor'iti, which means ‘Frozen Star’ in Quechua, celebrates the reappearance of the Pleiades constellation, also known as the ‘Seven Sisters’. This celestial event coincides with the Andean New Year and marks the beginning of the agricultural cycle. Over several days, pilgrims undertake a challenging pilgrimage to the Sinakara Valley, at the feet of the most sacred mountain in the south of Peru, Apu Ausangate (20,945ft / 6,385m high).
The festival culminates with a night of dances, prayers and offerings to the mountain deities, in the surreal setting of the glacier, lit by the full moon. An absolutely unique, authentic celebration, Qollor’ity brings together thousands of indigenous Andean people for 7 days filled with colourful costumes, rituals and elaborate processions, surrounded by the most breathtaking natural sceneries.
